A new start. We’ve been through a lot of those recently. First, with Advent and the start of the new Liturgical Year. Then, with the New Year of 2018. Finally, with the start of the Spring Semester.
It seems everyone loves to start over. Who doesn’t really? It’s a chance to move on from past mistakes and try again getting something done. New Year’s resolutions being the big ones. We take a look at ourselves, see our failures and go, “I’ve failed. Time to start over.” It’s one of the great things about our lives, being able to start over. But how often do we actually take advantage of it?
Let’s face it. We often push off starting over, because often we see it as too much work. “I failed my resolution to work out every day. Guess I’ll try again next year.” Or something similar. Our fallen nature makes us susceptible to be content in failure and often give up when success doesn’t come easy. But that’s where God comes in, always waiting for us.
By our baptism we began anew in this life of Children of God, a God who’s merciful and will give us as many ‘new starts’ as we need. This is Confession, after all. Where we can, whenever we want, go to God and say “Can I start over? I know I’ve failed in avoiding sin. But I want to try again to do better.”
So, as we begin this New Year, remember that it’s never to late to start over. With your resolution, friends, or God.
