Hi guys. While this blog is being written and released over a week after Ash Wednesday, that’s what I’m going to talk about here. If you are like me, single or not, you were upset that Valentine’s day fell on Ash Wednesday and you could not eat all the goodies that the holiday brings about. But upon further reflection I feel as though it was the best day possible for it to fall on.
When you think of love you probably think about the emotions of joy you feel with being with someone you care about. And while it is not wrong to feel this way, there is a better way to see love. Love is not an emotion, it is a choice and action. And the perfect manifestation of true love comes at the end of lent, and that is the Crucifixion. And on Ash Wednesday, (Valentine’s day), we remember God's gift of a promise of salvation.
Jesus loved us so much, that he made the choice to die for our sins. He did not have to, we are fallen creatures who daily make an intentional choice to disobey him. He did so because he loves you. This gift of true love is much better than a box of cheap chocolates or roses that will die in a couple weeks. Our gift, even though we must wait a short while, does not die or make us gain weight. It does the opposite, through it we can live and live more fully.
So, with this new gift what will you do with it? I encourage you to keep asking for this love by going to Mass on more than just Easter or Ash Wednesday. Heck go more than once a week. God is waiting for you to accept his gift. Reciprocate and make the choice to love the Lord back.
God Bless,
Andrew Smith
